MT4 vs MT5 for Copy Trading: Which to Run as Master

دليل   Choosing the master platform for a trade copier

When you copy trades, one account leads and the others follow. That leading account — the master — sets the tone for everything downstream, and whether it runs on MT4 or MT5 changes how cleanly your trades replicate. Here is how to choose.

The short answer: run your master on the platform your strategy was built for. MT4 is the simplest, most universal master because it is hedging-only and copies cleanly everywhere. MT5 as master gives you netting and multi-asset support, but you have to handle the netting-to-hedging conversion when copying down to MT4 or hedging accounts. The order model, not the platform badge, is what actually matters.

The one difference that drives everything: the order model

MT4 and MT5 record positions differently, and a copier has to respect that.

  • MT4 is hedging-only. Every trade is its own ticket. You can hold long and short on the same symbol at once. Simple and predictable.
  • MT5 supports two account types. A hedging MT5 account behaves like MT4. A netting MT5 account keeps a single net position per symbol, so an opposite order reduces or flips the existing position rather than opening a second one.

This matters the moment master and slave use different models. A hedging master copying to a netting slave, or the reverse, needs the copier to reconcile the two so the slave ends up in the intended exposure. The concept is defined in the glossary, and the platform specifics live on the ناسخ الصفقات MT4 و MT5 trade copier pages.

MT4 as master

Strengths. It is the universal source. Hedging tickets map onto almost any destination, the MQL4 expert-advisor base is enormous, and most brokers still offer MT4. If your edge is an MQL4 EA, running it on an MT4 master is the path of least resistance.

Trade-offs. No netting, an older platform, and only forex and CFDs at most brokers. For pure forex copying, none of this is a real limitation.

MT5 as master

Strengths. Netting when you want it, genuine multi-asset support (indices, metals, sometimes stocks and futures), and the more modern MQL5 language. If your strategy is written in MQL5 or trades beyond forex, MT5 is the natural master.

Trade-offs. Copying from a netting MT5 master down to MT4 (always hedging) means the copier must translate the position model, and partial closes on a net position have to be replicated proportionally. It is handled well, but it is a moving part to be aware of.

Symbol names still differ either way

Whichever platform is the master, brokers name instruments their own way — يورو دولار, EURUSD.m, EURUSD.i, EURUSDpro. A copier maps symbols between master and slave so trades land on the right instrument, and handles the old 4-digit versus 5-digit pricing difference. Do not pick a master platform to solve symbol naming; the copier does that regardless.

So which should you run as master?

Run MT4 as master if…

Your strategy is an MQL4 EA or manual forex trading, you want the simplest, most universal setup, and your slaves are a mix of MT4/MT5.

Run MT5 as master if…

Your strategy is MQL5, you trade multiple asset classes, or you specifically want a netting master — and you are comfortable with the conversion to hedging slaves.

In practice, most copy setups lead with the platform the strategy already lives on. Match the master to your strategy, let the copier handle the translation, and you avoid rebuilding anything.

Does it matter if my master is MT4 or MT5 for copying?

Yes, mainly because of the order model. MT4 is hedging-only and copies universally; MT5 can be netting or hedging and supports multi-asset, but a netting master needs conversion when copying to hedging or MT4 slaves.

Can I copy from an MT5 master to MT4 slaves?

Yes. The copier translates MT5’s position model to MT4’s hedging tickets so the slave reaches the intended exposure. See the MT4/MT5 route page.

Is MT4 or MT5 faster for copying?

The platform itself is not the bottleneck; local copy speed is typically sub-millisecond either way. Total latency depends more on your broker’s execution and network route.

Which has the bigger expert-advisor ecosystem?

MT4 still has the larger MQL4 EA base, which is a common reason traders keep MT4 as the master and copy outward.

Can one master feed both MT4 and MT5 slaves at once?

Yes. A single master can copy to a mix of MT4 and MT5 accounts simultaneously, each sized and mapped to its own rules.
