By the fifth window the fill was already worse, by the tenth the position sizes were wrong, and somewhere in the middle one account missed the trade entirely. Placing trades was never the hard part of managing money — doing it across many accounts, identically, reliably, and safely, is.

Multi-account management is the discipline of running one trading strategy across many separate accounts at once. A trade copier makes that mechanically possible, but the copier is only the engine. The real job is architecture, sizing, and risk control across accounts that are rarely identical: different balances, different brokers, different leverage, different clients with different tolerances. This guide walks through how to set that up as a money manager, step by step, and the mistakes that quietly break a book as it scales.

What multi-account management actually means for a money manager

With a copier-based setup, every client keeps their own individual trading account in their own name, with their own broker and their own funds. You trade once in a master account, and each trade is mirrored into every linked follower account in real time, scaled to that account. Nothing is pooled. You never hold the client’s money — in most setups you do not even need their full password, only read-only access (more on that below).

That is the key difference from the pooled models money managers also hear about — MAM and PAMM accounts, where client funds sit under one master and profit is allocated back. Those models are broker-dependent and keep everyone on the same broker. A copier is broker-neutral and keeps accounts fully segregated. We compare the two models in depth on our trade copier for money managers page; this guide assumes you have chosen the copier route and focuses on running it well.

  <text x="24" y="34" font-size="17" font-weight="700" fill="#0f2947">One strategy, many segregated accounts</text>
  <text x="24" y="56" font-size="12.5" fill="#64748b">You trade once; the copier mirrors each trade into every client account, scaled per account.</text>

  <rect x="30" y="110" width="150" height="120" rx="10" fill="#0f2947"/>
  <text x="105" y="152" font-size="14" font-weight="700" fill="#ffffff" text-anchor="middle">MASTER</text>
  <text x="105" y="174" font-size="11.5" fill="#cbd5e1" text-anchor="middle">your strategy</text>
  <text x="105" y="192" font-size="11.5" fill="#cbd5e1" text-anchor="middle">one trade</text>
  <text x="105" y="214" font-size="11.5" fill="#7dd3a0" text-anchor="middle">BUY 1.00 EURUSD</text>

  <rect x="235" y="128" width="110" height="84" rx="10" fill="#ffffff" stroke="#e11d2a" stroke-width="2"/>
  <text x="290" y="162" font-size="13" font-weight="700" fill="#e11d2a" text-anchor="middle">COPIER</text>
  <text x="290" y="182" font-size="10.5" fill="#64748b" text-anchor="middle">mirror & scale</text>

  <line x1="180" y1="170" x2="233" y2="170" stroke="#94a3b8" stroke-width="2.5"/>
  <polygon points="233,170 225,166 225,174" fill="#94a3b8"/>

  <g>
    <rect x="610" y="56" width="200" height="56" rx="9" fill="#f1f5f9" stroke="#cbd5e1"/>
    <text x="624" y="80" font-size="12.5" font-weight="700" fill="#0f2947">Client A · Broker 1</text>
    <text x="624" y="99" font-size="11" fill="#475569">$5,000 — copies 0.10 lot</text>
    <rect x="610" y="124" width="200" height="56" rx="9" fill="#f1f5f9" stroke="#cbd5e1"/>
    <text x="624" y="148" font-size="12.5" font-weight="700" fill="#0f2947">Client B · Broker 2</text>
    <text x="624" y="167" font-size="11" fill="#475569">$25,000 — copies 0.50 lot</text>
    <rect x="610" y="192" width="200" height="56" rx="9" fill="#f1f5f9" stroke="#cbd5e1"/>
    <text x="624" y="216" font-size="12.5" font-weight="700" fill="#0f2947">Client C · Broker 3</text>
    <text x="624" y="235" font-size="11" fill="#475569">$100,000 — copies 2.00 lot</text>
    <rect x="610" y="260" width="200" height="56" rx="9" fill="#f1f5f9" stroke="#cbd5e1"/>
    <text x="624" y="284" font-size="12.5" font-weight="700" fill="#0f2947">Client D · Broker 1</text>
    <text x="624" y="303" font-size="11" fill="#475569">$12,000 — copies 0.24 lot</text>
  </g>

  <line x1="345" y1="170" x2="608" y2="84" stroke="#94a3b8" stroke-width="1.6"/>
  <line x1="345" y1="170" x2="608" y2="152" stroke="#94a3b8" stroke-width="1.6"/>
  <line x1="345" y1="170" x2="608" y2="220" stroke="#94a3b8" stroke-width="1.6"/>
  <line x1="345" y1="170" x2="608" y2="288" stroke="#94a3b8" stroke-width="1.6"/>
  <text x="430" y="332" font-size="11" fill="#94a3b8">Each account is owned by the client, funded by the client, and never pooled.</text>

Figure 1: One master trade fans out to every client account, scaled to each account’s size.

Step 1: Design your account architecture first

Before you link a single client, decide how the book is organized. The simplest structure is one master account that every client follows. It is easy to reason about, but it forces one strategy and one risk profile on everyone. Most managers who run more than a handful of clients move to multiple masters — for example a conservative master and an aggressive master — and assign each client to the master that matches what they signed up for. Grouping clients this way means a change to one strategy does not accidentally alter risk for a client who wanted the other one.

Equally important is how you connect to a client’s account. You should only ever need the investor (read-only) password, or an equivalent read-only link, to copy trades into a client account. That lets the copier place trades but never lets you withdraw funds or change the client’s settings. Insisting on read-only access is both safer for the client and cleaner for you: it keeps a bright line between managing trades and controlling money, which is exactly the line regulators and clients care about.

Step 2: Choose a per-client sizing model

This is the decision that separates a professional book from a fragile one. A $5,000 account and a $100,000 account cannot take the same lot size — one will be barely working, the other will blow up. Every serious copier offers several sizing modes; pick one deliberately rather than leaving the default.

Sizing mode

How it works

Best for

Fixed lot

Every account trades the same lot, ignoring balance

Almost never for client books; equal-size demo tests only

Lot multiplier

Client lot = master lot × a fixed factor you set per client

Manual control when you know each account well

Balance-proportional

Client lot scales by client balance ÷ master balance

Mixed account sizes — the common default for managers

Equity-proportional

Same as above but tracks live equity, not just deposited balance

Books where clients add or withdraw funds often

Risk percent

Each account risks the same % per trade based on its stop distance

Strategies with defined stops and strict per-trade risk

For most managers, balance- or equity-proportional sizing is the right starting point: it keeps every client at the same risk relative to their own account. The worked example below shows a 1.00-lot master trade distributed proportionally. Whatever model you choose, read our deeper guide on copy trading lot sizing and risk management before you go live — the sizing mode is where most beginner mistakes hide.

  <text x="24" y="34" font-size="17" font-weight="700" fill="#0f2947">Balance-proportional sizing in action</text>
  <text x="24" y="56" font-size="12.5" fill="#64748b">Master balance $50,000 trading 1.00 lot. The moment your clients are not all at the same broker, the accounts stop being identical in ways that matter to a copier. Four differences cause almost all of the trouble.

Symbol names. One broker lists the euro as
EURUSD
, another as
EURUSD.pro
or
EURUSD.m
. If the copier looks for an exact match it will fail to place the trade. You fix this with symbol mapping — a table that translates the master’s symbol into each broker’s name.

Contract specs and minimum lots. Minimum lot size and lot step differ between brokers. A size that is valid at one broker can be rejected at another, or rounded down to nothing. A per-account minimum-lot floor and sensible rounding rules prevent silent misses.

Leverage and margin. A 2.00-lot trade that is comfortable on a 1:500 account can exceed free margin on a 1:30 account and be rejected. Proportional sizing helps, but you still need to watch margin on the lower-leverage accounts in your book.

Available instruments and hours. Not every broker offers the same indices, metals, or crypto CFDs, and trading hours differ. If the master trades a symbol a client’s broker does not offer, that client should simply skip it — configured, not left to error out.

  <text x="24" y="34" font-size="17" font-weight="700" fill="#0f2947">The normalization layer</text>
  <text x="24" y="56" font-size="12.5" fill="#64748b">A naive 1:1 copy breaks across brokers. That concentration is the hidden risk of multi-account management: your clients are not diversified across strategies, so your drawdown is their drawdown, simultaneously. Managing that means thinking at the level of the whole book, not just the individual trade.

The practical controls are per-client equity protection and a master kill-switch. Per-client drawdown caps let you set a floor — say, stop copying and flatten if an account draws down 15% — so a client who joined with a lower tolerance is protected even though everyone trades the same signals. A kill-switch on the master, triggered manually or by an equity rule, halts new copying across the entire book in one action when something looks wrong. Weekend and news-gap exposure deserves the same book-level view: if every account carries the same open position into a Sunday gap, size that exposure as one number, not twenty.

Step 5: Onboard, offboard, and keep clients informed

A healthy book grows and shrinks without drama. Adding a client should be a matter of linking their account to the right master and setting their sizing mode — it should not require touching anyone else. Removing a client should be equally clean: unlink the account, and their open trades are theirs to keep or close. Because accounts are segregated, a client can leave with their funds and history intact, which is a selling point worth making explicit.

Transparency keeps clients comfortable. They can see their own account in their own platform at any time, which is reassuring but also means your reporting has to match reality. Decide up front what you will share — monthly statements, a performance summary, the sizing model you use — and be clear that you place trades but never move their money. Clients who understand the structure complain less and stay longer.

Reliability: a book cannot afford to miss trades

With one personal account, a missed trade is an annoyance. Across a client book it is a credibility problem, because every client sees the gap. Reliability therefore stops being optional. The master and the copier need to run on infrastructure that stays up — for most managers that means a VPS near the broker rather than a home PC that sleeps, reboots for updates, or loses its connection overnight. We benchmarked the trade-offs in our cloud vs local trade copier latency comparison, which is worth reading before you decide where to host a book.

The fewer moving parts between the master and the followers, the fewer things can silently fail. A direct account-to-account copier has less to go wrong than older bridge-and-plugin chains, which matters more, not less, as the number of accounts grows — one fragile link multiplied across a hundred accounts is a hundred potential misses.

Compliance and broker permissions

Managing other people’s accounts carries obligations that vary by jurisdiction, and this guide is not legal or financial advice. Two practical points apply almost everywhere. First, confirm that each client’s broker — and, for funded traders, their prop firm — actually permits third-party or copied trading; some allow it freely, some restrict it, and a few forbid it. Our guide to which prop firms allow copy trading is a useful starting point for the funded-account side. Second, be clear about what you are and are not doing: with a segregated copier setup you are mirroring trades into accounts clients own, not pooling funds or taking custody, and keeping that distinction clean keeps you on the right side of most rules.

Common mistakes when scaling a book

Forcing one lot multiplier on accounts of very different sizes, so small accounts over-trade and large ones barely work.

Ignoring minimum-lot floors, so trades on the smallest accounts round to zero and silently never place.

Setting no per-client drawdown cap, so a conservative client rides the same deep drawdown as an aggressive one.

Running the master on a machine that sleeps or reboots, then wondering why half the book missed a trade.

Not mapping symbols for every broker, so one client fails to copy and no one notices until the statement arrives.

Not confirming the broker or prop firm allows copying before onboarding a client.

Frequently asked questions

How many accounts can one master copy to?

In practice, far more than most managers will ever need — books of dozens to hundreds of accounts are routine. The real limit is not a hard cap but the resources of the machine running the copier and the quality of each connection. A VPS with headroom will handle a large book comfortably; a laptop will struggle well before any software limit.

Do all my clients need to be at the same broker?

No. That is one of the main advantages of a copier over pooled MAM/PAMM accounts. Clients can be spread across different brokers and platforms, and you normalize the differences — symbol names, minimum lots, leverage — with mapping and per-account settings, as described in Step 3.

Should a money manager use MAM/PAMM or a trade copier?

It depends on whether you want pooled or segregated accounts. MAM/PAMM pools client funds under one master at a single broker; a copier keeps each client in their own segregated account and works across brokers. Many managers prefer the copier for the control and the clean separation from client money. We lay out the full comparison on our money manager copier page.

Can I give each client a different risk level?

Yes. Per-client sizing modes and drawdown caps let you run the same strategy at different risk for different clients — a conservative client can copy at half size with a tighter equity stop, while an aggressive client copies at full proportional size, all from the same master.

Do I ever hold or touch my clients’ money?

With a properly configured copier, no. Clients fund and own their own accounts, and you connect with read-only (investor) access that can place trades but cannot withdraw funds or change account settings. Keeping to read-only access is both safer for the client and a cleaner compliance position for you.

Can I manage prop firm accounts this way?

Often, yes — many funded traders copy a single strategy across several challenge or funded accounts — but only where the firm’s rules allow it. Policies vary and some firms restrict copying, so confirm each firm permits copied trading before you onboard a funded client.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"How many accounts can one master copy to?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Far more than most managers need; books of dozens to hundreds of accounts are routine.
