You place a trade on your master account, watch it fill, switch to the follower account — and nothing is there. No order, no error box, just an empty positions tab. A trade copier that silently does nothing is one of the most frustrating things in automated trading, because the platform rarely tells you why<\/em> it skipped the trade. It just skips it.<\/p>\n\n

The good news: a copier almost never fails at random. A copy either never left the master, never reached the follower, was rejected on the way in, or was deliberately filtered out — and each of those has a short list of concrete causes you can check in minutes. This guide walks through the nine reasons trades don’t copy, in the order you should actually check them, with the fix for each.<\/p>\n\n\n

Start here: read the copier log before you change anything<\/h2>\n\n\n

Before touching a single setting, open the log. Every serious copier writes one — the Journal<\/strong> tab in MetaTrader, the copier’s own activity panel, or the “trade activity” view in a cloud copier. The log is where the platform quietly records what it tried to do and why it stopped. Nine times out of ten the answer is already sitting there: “symbol not found”<\/em>, “invalid volume”<\/em>, “not enough money”<\/em>, “trade disabled”<\/em>, “filtered by settings”<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n

Changing settings before reading the log is how people spend an hour fixing the wrong thing. Find the line that corresponds to the trade that didn’t copy, read the reason, and then jump to the matching section below. The nine causes are ordered the same way a copy actually travels — from the master, through the engine, into the follower — so the first stage that fails is your answer.<\/p>\n\n\n

Think of a copied trade as passing through a series of gates. It has to leave the master, survive the link, match a tradable symbol, produce a valid order size, clear your filters, and finally be accepted by the follower’s broker. The first gate that fails<\/strong> is where your trade died. Here is the whole path:<\/p>\n\n\n

1. The copier link isn’t actually live<\/h3>\n\n\n

The most common “copier not copying” case isn’t a copier problem at all — the connection between the two accounts was never active to begin with. The copier service isn’t running, the master and follower accounts aren’t paired (wrong connection ID or an expired license slot), one of the accounts isn’t logged in, or a terminal the copy depends on is closed. Nothing can copy across a link that isn’t up.<\/p>\n\n

Confirm the copier is actually running, that both accounts show as connected, and that each account is logged in and online. If you copy to several followers, check each one individually — one dropped slot doesn’t announce itself. This whole class of failure is far more common on older copiers that run as an add-on inside<\/em> each trading terminal and depend on it staying open and enabled; a copier built on a direct account-to-account connection has fewer moving parts to fall over in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n

2. The symbol names don’t match<\/h3>\n\n\n

This is the single most common reason a live, connected copier skips trades. Your master opens EURUSD<\/code>. Your follower’s broker calls the same instrument EURUSD.pro<\/code>, EURUSD.m<\/code>, EURUSDx<\/code> or EURUSD-5<\/code>. The copier looks for an exact name, doesn’t find it, and logs “symbol not found”<\/em>. Metals and indices are worse: one broker’s XAUUSD<\/code> is another’s GOLD<\/code>, and US30<\/code> can be US30.cash<\/code> or DJ30<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n

The fix is symbol mapping<\/strong>. A good copier auto-detects common suffixes, but when it can’t, you tell it explicitly: master EURUSD<\/code> equals follower EURUSD.pro<\/code>, master XAUUSD<\/code> equals follower GOLD<\/code>. Set the map once per broker pair and it applies to every future trade. Also make sure the symbol is actually in the follower’s Market Watch<\/strong> — MetaTrader won’t trade a symbol that isn’t shown. This matters most when you are copying between MT4 and MT5<\/a> or across different broker families, where naming conventions rarely line up on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n

3. The follower lot rounds to zero or breaks a broker limit<\/h3>\n\n\n

If the symbol matches but the order still never appears, look at the size. Copiers that scale by balance or equity can produce a lot so small it rounds below the broker’s minimum — and a volume of zero is simply not a trade. Say your master trades 0.50 lots on a $50,000 account, and your follower holds $500. Balance-proportional sizing asks for 0.50 × (500 \/ 50,000) = 0.005 lots. The broker’s minimum is 0.01 with a 0.01 step, so the order rounds down to 0.00 and is rejected.<\/p>\n\n\n

The same gate catches the opposite problem: a lot that is too large<\/em>. Brokers cap maximum volume per order and total exposure per symbol, so a big proportional size can also be refused. The fix is to match your sizing mode to the account pair — a fixed lot or a sensible multiplier is more predictable than raw proportional scaling — and to set a minimum-lot floor so small accounts still trade. 4. There isn’t enough free margin on the follower<\/h3>\n\n\n

A copier can calculate a perfectly valid lot and still be rejected with “not enough money”<\/em>. The follower account simply doesn’t have the free margin to open the position — usually because it has less balance, lower leverage, or other positions already eating its margin. A master on 1:500 leverage can open a 1.0-lot position that a follower on 1:30 cannot afford at the same size.<\/p>\n\n

Check the follower’s free margin and leverage against what the copied size actually requires. If the accounts have very different leverage, scale the copy down with a multiplier rather than mirroring 1:1, and leave headroom so a cluster of trades opening at once doesn’t exhaust margin and start rejecting the later ones.<\/p>\n\n\n

5. The broker rejected the order<\/h3>\n\n\n

Sometimes the copier sends a flawless order and the broker<\/strong> throws it back. The usual culprits: a maximum-slippage or max-deviation setting so tight the price moved past it before the fill, requotes on a dealing-desk broker, the symbol’s session being closed (indices and metals keep different hours than majors), or trading simply being disabled on that symbol for that account. The log will show “off quotes”<\/em>, “requote”<\/em>, “market closed”<\/em> or “trade disabled”<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n

Loosen an over-tight slippage cap, confirm the instrument is open for trading, and remember that a copy fired seconds after the master can hit a different price — which is normal market behaviour, not a copier bug. A fast, low-latency copier shrinks that window, but it can never make a closed market trade.<\/p>\n\n\n

6. A copier filter is quietly excluding the trade<\/h3>\n\n\n

Copiers are full of filters that do exactly what you told them to — including things you forgot you set. A symbol whitelist that doesn’t include the pair, a magic-number filter set to copy only one strategy’s trades, a lot-size filter that ignores trades below a threshold, a trading-hours window, a direction or reverse setting, or the classic “copy new trades only”<\/strong> that refuses to copy a position that was already open when the copier started. None of these produce an error — the copier is working as configured.<\/p>\n\n

Open your filter settings and read them against the trade that didn’t copy. If you turned the copier on after<\/em> opening a position on the master, most copiers will never pick that position up; close and reopen it, or enable “copy existing positions” if your tool offers it.<\/p>\n\n\n

7. The follower account can’t place the trade<\/h3>\n\n\n

Sometimes the copy reaches the follower and dies on the doorstep, because the account itself isn’t allowed to execute. The usual causes are account-level: the follower is logged in with its investor (read-only) password<\/strong>, which can view and receive but can never place an order; trading is disabled on the account (a read-only or archived account, or one whose broker has suspended new orders); or the copier’s own license has expired<\/strong> or doesn’t cover the number of accounts you’re actually running.<\/p>\n\n

Confirm the follower is logged in with its real trading password, that the account is enabled for live trading, and that your copier license is active for every account in the setup. These are quick to check and easy to miss, because none of them throws a loud error — the trade simply never appears.<\/p>\n\n\n

8. It does copy — just slowly<\/h3>\n\n\n

Not every “it’s not copying” is a failure. Sometimes the trade arrives, just late enough that you assumed it never would. Delays come from an overloaded VPS, too many terminals and charts competing for one CPU, a frozen terminal that needs a restart, or a VPS located far from the broker’s servers. The copy engine might be instant while the broker leg adds the lag.<\/p>\n\n

Run only the terminals you need, restart them on a schedule, give the machine enough CPU and RAM for the number of accounts, and host near your broker. 9. Your prop firm or platform doesn’t allow it<\/h3>\n\n\n

Finally, the copy may be blocked by rules outside the copier entirely. Many proprietary trading firms restrict or forbid copying between a challenge and a funded account, or between unrelated traders, and some run their own detection. Others trade on platforms — DXtrade, Match-Trader, cTrader — that your particular copier may not support, so there is simply no bridge for the trade to cross.<\/p>\n\n

A 60-second diagnostic flow<\/h2>\n\n\n

When a trade doesn’t copy, don’t guess — walk the gates in order and stop at the first failure:<\/p>\n\n\n

  1. Is the link live?<\/strong> The copier is running, both accounts show as connected, and each account is logged in and online.<\/li>\n
  2. Did the master actually fire?<\/strong> Confirm the trade exists on the master and the copier logged that it saw it.<\/li>\n
  3. Does the symbol match?<\/strong> Check for a suffix mismatch and that the symbol is in the follower’s Market Watch.<\/li>\n
  4. Is the lot valid?<\/strong> Not rounding to zero, above the broker minimum, below the maximum, on the right step.<\/li>\n
  5. Is there free margin?<\/strong> Enough on the follower, given its leverage and open positions.<\/li>\n
  6. Do your filters pass?<\/strong> Symbol, magic, time, direction, and “new trades only” all allow this trade.<\/li>\n
  7. Did the broker accept it?<\/strong> No slippage\/requote rejection, market open, trading enabled, permissions granted.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n

    The first “no” is your cause. This is also why the copier log matters so much: it usually tells you which gate failed before you’ve finished reading this list.<\/p>\n\n\n

    Preventing copy failures before they cost you<\/h2>\n\n\n

    Most copy failures are set-and-forget problems that only surface in a live market. Prevent them by doing a test trade<\/strong> every time you add a new account pair: open a tiny position on the master, confirm it lands on the follower at a sensible size, then close it. That single test exercises the link, the symbol map, the sizing and the permissions all at once.<\/p>\n\n

    Beyond that: build and save your symbol map per broker before you go live, set a minimum-lot floor so small accounts still trade, keep leverage and margin headroom in mind when you choose a sizing mode, host the terminals on a capable VPS near your brokers, and restart the terminals on a schedule so nothing freezes mid-session.     Why is my trade copier connected but still not copying?<\/h3>\n\n

    A green “connected” status only means the link is alive — the trade can still be stopped at a later gate. The usual reasons a connected copier skips a trade are a symbol-name mismatch, a lot that rounds below the broker minimum, a filter excluding that symbol or magic number, or “copy new trades only” ignoring a position that was open before the copier started.     Why does a trade open on the master but not the follower?<\/h3>\n\n

    The master fired, so the problem is downstream: either the follower broker doesn’t recognise the symbol (suffix mismatch or the instrument isn’t offered), the calculated lot rounded to zero or exceeded a limit, there wasn’t enough free margin, or the broker rejected the order on slippage or a closed market.     Do both accounts need the same broker for copying to work?<\/h3>\n\n

    No. Copiers are designed to work across different brokers and even different platforms. But different brokers use different symbol names and different instrument lists, so cross-broker copying almost always needs a symbol map, and the follower can only trade instruments its own broker actually offers.<\/p>\n\n\n

    Why are my copied lot sizes zero or wrong?<\/h3>\n\n

    This is a sizing-mode problem. Balance- or equity-proportional scaling on a small follower account can produce a lot below the broker’s minimum, which rounds to zero and is rejected.
